Why I Think You Should Buy From a Small Candle Company Run By an Ex-Cop and Her Dog

There are thousands of candle companies out there. I know, because I've spent years standing across a folding table from most of them at vendor markets, comparing notes at 7am while we set up our booths in the cold.

So why us? Honest answer: I don't think you should buy from us just because we exist. I think you should buy from us because of what buying from a company like this actually means.

You're not buying wax. You're buying a moment.

I say this a lot because it's true. Nobody lights a candle because they desperately need hydrocarbons to combust. You light a candle because you want the five minutes after. The deep breath. The signal to your own nervous system that says, okay, we're done for today.

When you buy from a small business instead of a mass-market brand, you're not just choosing a nicer scent. You're choosing to fund an actual person's ability to keep doing the thing that got her through the hardest years of her life. That's not guilt-tripping you into a purchase — it's just the math of how small businesses work. Every order is somebody's rent, somebody's ingredients for next month, somebody's ability to keep the lights on.

You're getting a person, not a call center

If something's wrong with your order, you're not getting routed through six different chatbots. You're getting me, or someone on my very small team, actually looking at what happened and fixing it. I've hosted over 500 vendor events. I have talked to thousands of customers face to face, not through a return policy PDF. That changes how a business is run. You can't fake caring about quality when you're the one who has to look someone in the eye at a market table.

Every candle is hand poured, in small batches

Not on an assembly line. Not overseas. In small batches, checked by hand, poured by people who know what a bad batch looks like and will not ship it to you. That's slower than a factory. It's also the only way I know how to guarantee what's actually in the candle you're burning in your kids' bedroom or your own.

You're supporting something built out of an actual rebuild, not a marketing plan

I didn't start this business because I ran a customer segmentation analysis and found a gap in the candle market. I started it because I lost my career, my marriage ended, and I needed something — anything — that was mine to build again. Pearl & Company grew out of that, slowly, through markets and workshops and a lot of trial and error, into a real six-figure business with wholesale partners and a loyal customer base.

That matters for what you're buying, because it means every decision in this business — the ingredients, the packaging, how we treat customers — comes from someone who actually needed this to work, not someone optimizing a spreadsheet.

Oh, and there's a dog

Pearl, my Great Pyrenees, is the unofficial CEO. Charlotte Mae is the puppy intern. Ezra and Marvin handle security and surveillance, respectively, with a combined qualification level of "very good boys." They show up in our content because our customers genuinely like them, and honestly, so do I. This is a real, slightly ridiculous, very human small business — not a brand voice generated in a boardroom.

What you actually get

  • Non-toxic, vegan, soy-blend candles you don't have to interrogate the label to trust
  • A company that will actually answer you if something's wrong
  • Products made by people, not a factory line
  • A small part in someone's real rebuild — mine, and honestly, maybe your own

You don't need a reason beyond "I like the way it smells." But if you're looking for one, that's ours.
